Face to Face Counselling

Aberdeen based therapist trained to observe your non-verbal communication - for example facial expressions, energy levels or body language to get a deeper understanding of what you are saying.

Who is this for?

Being in a room with someone may help to set an environment which encourages good, trusting and collaborative rapport.

Human presence and contact can also help with issues such as depression, anxiety or isolation. Receiving those face to face empathetic gestures could make a big difference to someone who has been suffering alone or spends a lot of time alone. The more delicate or personal issues such as abuse or gas lighting may also be beneficial face to face, as it may feel safer and more confidential. It can also enable you to develop your communication skills in a safe environment and often is seen as a more personal form of counselling.

“It’s been really good to see things in a different light. I thought it would be a lot more draining but it’s been more like a weight has been lifted. I feel I have opened up about things quite easily and normally I’m quite guarded.”

What can you expect?

Aberdeen based trained Person Centred Counsellor and Psychotherapist who works with adults over the age of 16.

I can help with a wide range of difficulties such as depression, general anxiety disorder, social anxiety, loneliness, suicidal thoughts, stress, work-related stress, self-harm, low self-esteem / self-confidence, emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, trauma, childhood emotional neglect, burnout, bereavement, bullying, individual relationship difficulties, family issues. I am particularly passionate around issues relating to neurodiversity such as ADHD or Autism and I am experienced in working with those who are currently facing or recovering from Narcissistic abuse or any form of gas lighting. I deeply understand the importance of slowly building your confidence and regaining a sense of identity after having experienced this type of abuse.

I am fortunate to have worked in a generalist counselling capacity and have experienced a wide range of client issues. I have always felt it a privilege that clients share their lives and experiences with me and therefore fully understand the need and importance of confidentiality with each and every client.

“I felt I could come to my sessions with Catherine and tell her anything without being judged. It was a very safe space. She helped me work out my feelings and gave me ways to express them when I find it difficult.”

  • Face to face counselling is what it sounds like! You are coming into my office and having face to face counselling. It is a professional yet comfortable setting. Being in the room with the counsellor can be reassuring for some, especially for those who might be experiencing loneliness, depression or a challenging home life. The advantages of face to face counselling are that it may feel more personal and there's more opportunity for me to observe the whole picture - body language, energy levels or demeanour. There is also the opportunity to build trust in the face to face setting.

  • You will normally have an introductory call with myself (free of charge) where I will introduce myself and explain how I work. You will have an opportunity to share the reasons that have brought you to counselling and ask any questions you might have. Then around 24hrs prior to your appointment you will receive confirmation of the date and time and location of our session normally by text.

Please remember to try to arrive as close to your appointment time as possible so we can make full use of our 50 minute session together.

  • Opening up to others face to face can be an emotional and sometimes challenging experience, so taking care of yourself after each session is important. I will also work to ensure that you have a safe, empathic and non-judgemental environment.

Belief in the counselling process and a little patience will also be beneficial, the mind takes time to recover just like the body!

Making sure you have the time for counselling at this point in your life is also worth considering. Time for not just the appointments but time to reflect on them, working through things and maybe even a little homework inbetween sessions (dont worry this is optional!) And finally with the above in mind, for it to work, all I ask is that you have an open mind, are open to personal growth and to learning about yourself!

  • Before coming to face to face counselling it is worth considering the following:

How do you feel about face to face sessions?

Are you able to get to and from sessions at this location?

Will there be anything or anyone that might make attending sessions difficult?

    Do you have accessibility issues?

Is the timing right for you just now?

Can you commit to weekly sessions?

Can you afford the sessions and for how long?

Get in touch for an introductory call.

If you are unsure of which method is best for you, please don’t worry – we can discuss this in our free of charge introductory call and go from there.
